Why emergency care costs so much

  • After-hours staffing: emergency hospitals run 24/7 with vets, technicians and equipment on standby.
  • Diagnostics: blood work, X-rays and ultrasound are often needed before treatment starts.
  • Deposits: many hospitals ask for a deposit before treating, so you may need the money up front.

How pet insurance changes the bill

With an accident & illness plan, you usually pay the vet, then claim. After your annual deductible, the insurer reimburses your chosen share (often 70%, 80% or 90%) of eligible costs, up to your annual limit.

Example: a $3,000 foreign-body surgery, with a $250 deductible and 80% reimbursement, would mean about $2,200 back and roughly $800 out of pocket. Without insurance you'd pay the full $3,000.

Insurance only covers problems that start after coverage begins and after the waiting period, so it works best when you enroll before anything goes wrong.
